Energy Recovery Ventilator Install in Chamblee, Georgia

A homeowner in Chamblee, Georgia, called because they had very high levels of radon in their basement. Their 48-hour average was over 30 pCi/L!

The home was built in the 1970s and had uncapped, hollow cinderblock walls. There were two areas with dirt floors, and the rest of the basement was unfinished. The home also had a furnace in the basement that served the basement and the main floor.

Hollow, uncapped block wall foundations can be very difficult to mitigate. Homes with HVAC systems drawing air from the basement and supplying it to an upper level can also be problematic. They can create a substantial amount of negative pressure in the basement. After evaluating the need for at least 3 extraction points, HVAC balancing, and the potential that the block walls might need to be addressed as well, Mike got out his Radon Sniffer and demonstrated that there were high levels of radon in the block walls themselves.

Instead of spending a fortune on a vapor barrier and extraction points, we offered an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) as a solution. The ERV pulls stale, contaminated air with radon out of the home and replaces it with fresh, filtered outdoor air.
